JUPITER, Fla. • Cardinals reliever Lance Lynn and prospect Jordan Swagerty will not throw bullpens as scheduled this morning at Roger Dean Stadium's back complex because of soreness.

Lynn has been slowed by a hamstring injury.

Swagerty had what manager Mike Matheny described as mild soreness in his throwing arm.

"If something is even minutely bothering you it makes sense (to take a break)," Matheny said. "You're not going to be able to make an impression if you're on the shelf."

Lynn is competing for one of the spots on the right side of the bullpen. A strapping righty, Lynn has been in Florida at the team's complex for a month, but this past week his wife had their first child, and Matheny said "there's a lot going on for him."

Matheny made the point on Sunday that there will be several pitchers who experience soreness in this first week because they haven't been outside or they haven't been off a mound like the ones here -- or both.

Matheny described Swagerty's ailment as "arm tightness."

Both pitchers are considered day-to-day for now. They would next be scheduled to throw a bullpen on Thursday. Light bullpens like the ones the pitchers are doing now in camp are scheduled for every other day.

Holliday, Freese join informal workouts

Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday and World Series MVP David Freese traveled from St. Louis together Monday afternoon, and both will join their teammates during today's informal workouts for position players.

"I've been looking forward to this for a few months now," Freese said. "You get down here. You get on the field. Everything from here is just about baseball."

Some quick notes from the morning at Camp Cardinals:

• Jon Jay, Daniel Descalso and Pete Kozma are also making their first appearances of camp this morning.

• Koyie Hill, who is competing for the backup catcher spot, will catch Chris Carpenter and Jake Westbrook during bullpens today.

"The things they usually get me out with, now I have to figure out why they work," said Hill, a former Chicago Cubs catcher.

• Starter Yadier Molina will catch Tyrell Jenkins, the only teen in camp.

• There is a "rookie meeting" set for this morning aside from the usual clubhouse meeting that the manager and his staff holds to run through the day's schedule.

• ESPN's John Kruk held court with some players this morning. The Baseball Tonight bus is making its first stop of spring with the Cardinals. They will appear throughout the day on the various ESPN channels. The ESPN personalities will be joined on the bus by manager Mike Matheny for an interview and a pitcher is set to join them. The morning-line favorite is Adam Wainwright.

The schedule of throwers for today is as follows:

10:45 a.m. FLA time: RHP Chris Carpenter, RHP Tyrell Jenkins, RHP Joe Kelly

11:00 a.m. FLA time: RHP Jake Westbrook, RHP Kyle McClellan, RHP Fernando Salas.

11:15 a.m. FLa time: RHP Adam Wainwright, RHP Shelby Miller, RHP Trevor Rosenthal.

11:30 a.m. FLA time: LHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Brandon Dickson, LHP Sam Freeman, LHP John Gast.
