JUPITER, Fla. -- Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak on Thursday morning ruled out a possible acquisition of free agent starting pitcher Roy Oswalt, insisting the club is committed to its current starting rotation.
Mozeliak made the circuit of St. Louis media this morning, at one point insisting Oswalt "would not be pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals."
"I never had any confidence we were going to bring him in," Mozeliak said. "I was paying attention to the market and ultimately, I've always stated I've felt comfortable with our five."
Oswalt is expected to make a determination about his future before the weekend after failing to reach agreement with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and Cardinals in recent weeks.
A close friend of Oswalt's said Wednesday he "would not be surprised" if Oswalt agreed to terms with the defending World Champions. Mozeliak, who had refused comment about the matter in recent weeks, broke his silence Thursday by indicating that the parties had not had meaningful negotiations in the last 30 days.
"Nothing's changed," Mozeliak said.
The Cardinals appear set with Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, Kyle Lohse and Jake Westbrook as their rotation. Acquiring Oswalt -- or any other starter -- would have necessitated a role change or a trade, likely involving Westbrook, who enjoys full no-trade protection.
"We've always been committed to the five guys here," Mozeliak said. "When you look at the available players in the market, do you consider and pursue at times? The answer is yes. Really, the stance on our club hasn't changed in the last 30 days."
Asked if any member of his current rotation had reason to wonder about his status, Mozeliak said, "Not in my mind."
"I've always been bullish on our five, and nothing's changed," Mozeliak said.
