JUPITER, Fla. • Sitting in his office at Busch Stadium a little more than a week ago, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny pointed to the various walls and illustrated the Shakespeare quote that was going to one place and the Jim Collins motto that will go on another wall.
"I'm big on quotes," Matheny explained.
The first workout schedule of spring training confirms that.
At the bottom of the one-sheet schedule that the Cardinals will follow today during their first official workout of spring is a quote. It comes from former president George W. Bush:
"From now on any definition of a successful life, has to include serving others."
That quote was actually said in St. Louis during a speech by the president at Washington University. According to news reports, Bush said it standing under a banner that read, "Students Who Care."
Most of the morning here at the Cardinals' complex in Jupiter will be spent conducting physicals. All of the players will have their medical checks done before the team takes the field for an 10:30 a.m. St. Louis time workout. Matheny will conduct a clubhouse meeting at 10 a.m. St. Louis time. There is 30 miniutes carved into the schedule for that.
Overall, the one-sheet schedule looks and reads a lot like the schedules that manager Tony La Russa and bench coach Joe Pettini put together in past springs.
There are throwers, non-throwers and early arrival position players.
A total of 15 pitchers will be throwing bullpens today.
The list, in order of appearance starting at 11:15 a.m. St. Louis time: Chris Carpenter, Lance Lynn, Tyrell Jenkins, and Joe Kelly; Adam Wainwright ("Waino" on the schedule), Shelby Miller, Trevor Rosenthal, and Jordan Swagerty; Jaime Garcia, Brandon Dickson, Sam Freeman and John Gast; and the final group of Jake Westbrook, Kyle McClellan and Fernando Salas.
Kyle Lohse is the only starter in the non-throwers program today.
Yadier Molina is scheduled to catcher Carpenter and Wainwright.
Tony Cruz, who is competing for the backup job, will catch Lynn and Miller. Bryan Anderson, another candidate for the backup job, will catch Rosenthal and Jenkins. Koyie Hill, the veteran backup signed to a minor-league deal, is set to see Kelly and Swagerty.
These bullpens are the first step toward the live batting practice that pitchers will throw once position players report. That is the final step before they make an appearance in a Grapefruit League game.
Throughout the day here at StlToday.com, we will be attempting to transport you to Jupiter for the first workout through a multimedia stream/chat that you can find here.
The coverage starts at 8 a.m. St. Louis time and continues deep into the afternoon.
