Game 6 • AT&T PARK
RHP Chris Carpenter, Cardinals • 0-2, 3.71 (1-1, 1.86 postseason)
Vs. Giants, 2012 • 0-1, 4.50 ERA, one start
Scouting report • When he faced the Giants earlier in this series, Carpenter was wrestling with his fastball, unable to get it to do consistently what he commanded. He continues to build strength and velocity from start to start — this will be his sixth of the season — and saw his average velocity inch to 90.8 mph on his fastball and 90.5 mph on his sinker, according to Brooks Baseball. He threw 24 of his 39 sinkers for strikes, but didn't fool the Giants with any pitches (only three swings and misses). "A win tonight would give Carpenter the clinching game in three of the Cardinals' past four playoff series.
RHP Ryan Vogelsong, Giants • 14-9, 3.37 (1-0, 1.50 postseason)
Vs. Cardinals, 2012 • 2-0, 0.64 ERA, two starts
Scouting report • A non-roster invitee to spring training in 2011, Vogelsong seized a role in the rotation and then went out and won 13 games with a 2.71 ERA for the Giants that season. That was good to get him consideration for the various Comeback Player of the Year awards. This season the righty pitched more innings, had more strikeouts, and a lower WHIP. His reinvention may be clearest against the Cardinals. Before rejoining the Giants, Vogelsong was 1-4 with a 8.49 ERA in 14 games. In the past two seasons, he's 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA in three starts, including his Game 2 victory.
