Michigan State prevails in OT
Keith Appling scored 24 points to help No. 5 Michigan State beat Minnesota 87-75 in overtime after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the second half then blowing a lead late in regulation. The Spartans (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) scored 15 straight points after trailing 53-43 with 15:57 left. But Michigan State (13-4, 2-2) then blew a five-point lead in the last 13 seconds before scoring the first nine points of OT to regain control.
OU gives Iowa State its first loss • Buddy Hield scored 22 points to help Oklahoma knock off previously unbeaten Iowa State 87-82. The Sooners (13-3, 2-1 Big 12) dropped No. 9 Iowa State to 14-1, 2-1. DeAndre Kane had 23 points for the visiting Cyclones.
Kansas rips K-State • Andrew Wiggins scored 22 points and No. 18 Kansas roared past No. 25 Kansas State 86-60. The Jayhawks (11-4, 2-0 Big 12) shot 56 percent from the field while beating the visiting Wildcats (12-4, 2-1) for the 48th time in the last 51 meetings.
Oklahoma State ekes out victory • Markel Brown hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to lift No. 11 Oklahoma State to a 73-72 win at West Virginia. The Cowboys (14-2, 2-1 Big 12) dropped the Mountaineers to 10-6, 2-1.
Georgia wins again • Kenny Gaines and Charles Mann each scored 22 points and Georgia, coming off an upset victory at Missouri, beat visiting Alabama 66-58. The Bulldogs (8-6, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) dropped the Crimson Tide to 7-8, 1-1.
Arkansas’s streak ends • Dorian Finney-Smith scored 22 points as No. 10 Florida overcame the absence of leading scorer Casey Prather to snap Arkansas’ 23-game home winning streak with an 84-82 overtime victory. Finney-Smith, starting in place of Prather, also added a season-high 15 rebounds as the Gators (13-2, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) won their seventh in row. Ky Madden’s 23 points led the Razorbacks (11-4, 0-2)
Clemson sends Duke to 1-2 in ACC • K.J. McDaniels scored 24 points to help Clemson rout visiting Duke 72-59. The Blue Devils (12-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 36-26 late in the first half before the Tigers (11-4, 2-1) put together a 37-18 run to take control.
SIUE falls • Dennis Ogbe scored 16 points and Tennessee Tech held off visiting SIU-Edwardsville 64-63. The Golden Eagles (10-9, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) led 47-26 early in the second half but the Cougars (4-13, 1-3) roared back before Donivine Stewart couldn’t hit a layup and Ray Lester missed the putback as time expired.
SEMO prevails • Tyler Stone’s 27 points led Southeast Missouri State to a 102-94 victory over visiting Tennessee State. The Redhawks (9-8, 1-3 Ohio Valley) shot 65 percent from the field and ended a losing streak at four games by beating TSU (2-16, 1-3).
Evansville wins at SIUC • D.J. Balentine scored 33 points, making six of 10 3-point attempts, to lead Evansville to a 75-69 win at Southern Illinois. The Purple Aces (8-9, 1-3 Missouri Valley) snapped a 12-game losing streak in Carbondale. Mike Balogun led the Salukis (5-12, 1-3) with 15 points.
