STATE COLLEGE, PA. -- Bruce Weber said he doesn't typically name team captains but when he did so early in the season the choices were Demetri McCamey and Bill Cole.
After appearing rudderless, especially at Northwestern on Saturday, Weber had the players vote to re-name captains for the remainder of the season, starting with tonight's game at Penn State.
Their choices: McCamey and Cole.
This came after Weber said that "maybe those guys haven't spoken up and aren't taking accountability for the team.'' This whole thing about team captains has certainly been overhyped, but Weber has made it a focus by constantly harping on the team's lack of leadership.
Now we'll see if McCamey and Cole respond at the behest of their teammtes more than they did when Weber made the appointment.
"You can vote for captains,'' Weber said. "But those guys have to take that role and take some pride in it and do something with it.''
As a side note, in voting on stltoday.com, fans feel that Jeff Jordan would be the best captain. The junior walk-on has garnered support from 41 percent of voters, followed by McCamey (34 percent) and Mike Tisdale (32 percent).
