Iowa rolls past Eastern Illinois
Adam Robinson ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, and No. 9 Iowa breezed past Eastern Illinois 37-7.
Senior Ricky Stanzi threw for 229 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who won their 10th straight season opener under coach Kirk Ferentz.
Iowa has its highest preseason ranking in 22 years, and the Hawkeyes made quick work of the FCS Panthers on Saturday.
Robinson scored on TD runs of 2 and 4 yards, and Paki O'Meara blocked a punt and returned it 42 yards to put the Hawkeyes ahead 21-0 late in the first quarter.
Iowa got a brief scare when Stanzi landed awkwardly in the second quarter, but he quickly returned and played until the game was well in hand.
No. 19 Penn St. 44, Youngstown St. 14 • True freshman Rob Bolden threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns, Chaz Powell had a 100-yard kickoff return for a score and Penn State brushed off a sluggish start.
Coach Joe Paterno got his 395th career victory by starting a true freshman at quarterback in a season opener for the first time in his 45 years as head coach.
"He has got an arm, he's got a little poise, he did some things a little better than the other guys on more occasions," Paterno said. "There are days I came off the field not knowing who I wanted to play."
Michigan State 38, W. Michigan 14 • Freshman Le'Veon Bell rushed for 141 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns to spark the Spartans. Bell's 75-yard run was the key play in a scoring drive that gave the Spartans a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. He followed it up with touchdown runs of 2 yards in the second quarter and 18 yards in the third quarter to put Michigan State ahead 35-7.
