What started out as positive day for Mizzou basketball took a drastic turn this afternoon when Matt Painter turned down the school's offer to be its basketball coach.
"He's not coming," one source told the Post-Dispatch's Vahe Gregorian. The other said it was "100 percent" that the deal was off.
Earler in the day, a source told the Post-Dispatch's Bernie Miklasz that Painter had called Mizzou athletic director Mike Alden to say he's "in" as the school's next coach.
Even Mizzou basketball player Kim English tweeted "Yeeesssssssssss!!!" just after 1:30 p.m. today without further explanation.
But this afternoon that all changed when Painter agreed on a new eight-year contract through the 2018-19 season with the Boilermakers.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
"We are thrilled to announce that Matt will continue his leadership of our men's basketball program at his alma mater," athletics director Morgan Burke said in a statement released by the school. "He has been at the helm of the winningest four-year period in the storied history of Boilermaker basketball, and we pledge to work with him to win championships."
Said Painter: "I am extremely excited about continuing my career at Purdue. I believe we have built something very special. At the same time, I feel we have much more ahead of us to accomplish.
"There's a lot to be excited about right now with Purdue basketball. We are moving into our new offices and locker room complex over the next couple of weeks. Our program is built on hard work, and we are ready to get back to improving as a team and a staff.
"At the end of the day, my heart is at Purdue, and this is a place where I want to win a national championship."
Painter is in Florida and will return to campus later today or tomorrow.
