While St. Louis University coach Rick Majerus will definitely miss the next two games because of an infection that has complicated the cut on his leg suffered in a collision with a player on Jan. 1, Majerus said Thursday he can't say for sure when he'll be back with the team.
Asked if he expected to be back with the team after its two-game trip to Pennsylvania, which has games with Temple on Sunday and Duquesne on Wednesday, Majerus said: "I can't say that. I don't know that. If you know that, you're a better doctor than my physicans. I don't want to put any pressure on myself. I just don't know. I'm not a physican."
Majerus said he was "doing the best I can," while confined to his room and that it was tough for him to miss games and practices. (Because he doesn't get CBS College Sports where he lives, he couldn't watch the game live last night.) He hasn't been with the team on the practice court since the accident happened, and, with the team on the road from Friday to next Thursday, he will be away from the team for almost two weeks if he can rejoin them after the Duquesne game. After that, SLU has a home game vs. St. Joseph's on Jan. 15, then a road game at Fordham.
"It's extraordinarily hard (to be away)," he said. "I (coach) because of passion, not because of any other reason. I like the guys, like the coaches, like competing. I like teaching basketball.
"It's a bad experience. A lot of people have it a lot worse than I have. You can't throw a pity party for yourself. Most of life is dealing with adversity. I've always known that."
Majerus gave an endorsement to associate head coach Porter Moser, who is running the team in his absence. "He's done a terrific job," Majerus said, "a better job than I may have done."
