Former St. Louis University basketball coach Charlie Spoonhour received a lung transplant Saturday at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and had his breathing tube removed Wednesday afternoon, according to a journal in his name on the caringbridge.org web site.

"We are happy to report that the new lung seems to be performing very well," read an entry posted Wednesday. "He is alert and speaking and hopefully will start some limited physical therapy tomorrow."

In July it was found that he had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, defined on the Mayo Clinic website as 'scarring or thickening of the lungs without a known cause." (Vahe Gregorian)
