SLU men’s basketball players Kwamain Mitchell and Willie Reed are currently no longer enrolled at the school, according to a statement released earlier today by the university.
While St. Louis University officials gave no further details, sources have told the Post-Dispatch that the players’ current status is related to allegations of a sexual assault first reported in early May.
At that time, the Post-Dispatch reported that St. Louis police had questioned three SLU basketball players about an alleged sexual assault in a campus apartment. The names of the players were not made public.
Police said a 20-year-old SLU student said she had been assaulted by two people in the early morning hours on May 1 in the campus’ Grand Forest Apartments on Laclede Avenue.
In May, Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce called the allegations against the student-athletes “extremely serious” but said her office had found “insufficient evidence for us to bring charges against the suspects at this time.”
After Joyce’s announcement, David Korum, an attorney for the woman who reported the assault, said the student and her family were disappointed with the decision not to prosecute. “It appears at the very least that there is sufficient evidence of violations of university code of student conduct, which, if proven, would support disciplinary action including expulsion,” Korum said.
SLU’s policy on sexual assault says that “even if criminal justice authorities choose not to prosecute, the university can pursue disciplinary action.” Such action could result in dismissal or suspension.
To date there are no charges pending from the alleged assault.
