Jake Barnett, a 6-5 guard who played last season at the University of Toledo, is transferring to SLU. Barnett will have to sit out a season and when he become eligible to play in 2011-12, he'll have three years of eligibility remaining.
SLU had pursued Barnett out of Wauwatosa High in Wisconsin and Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass. In his one season at Toledo, he averaged 12.9 points and 4.4 rebounds and shot 37 percent from 3-point range. Toledo went 4-28 last season and had a coaching change after the season, which prompted Barnett to transfer.
Barnett will be the kind of player coach Rick Majerus talks about enviously on other teams: When he can start playing for SLU, he'll be three years out of high school and still have three years of eligibility left. Or another way, after Kyle Cassity graduates, Barnett will still have two years of eligibility left.
Perhaps best of all for SLU, he shot 80 percent on free throws last season.
