What a drag it is getting old. Just ask former Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds, who has been unable to contribute much to the Reds’ playoff push.
Edmonds, 40, has just three hits in 22 at bats since arriving via trade from the Brewers. He left Monday’s 11-2 loss with a strained oblique muscle and could be destined for the disabled list.
“This has been an ongoing deal. It's been sore the last week, two weeks,” Edmonds told the Cincinnati Enquirer after the game. “Not playing much, I thought it was going to get better. I guess it have me a false sense of security.”
Edmonds has also been struggling with a sore Achilles tendon. He is hopeful of avoiding the DL, noting that similar oblique strain required only a three-day break earlier this season.
“I tweaked it, and it was a three-day deal,” Edmonds told the Enquirer. “I’ll see what the doctor says.”
Another aging ex-Cardinal, reliever Russ Springer, will miss the rest of the season after his undergoing back surgery.
"BRADY BUNCH" NO FANS OF THE JETS
The Patriots-Jets rivalry is as lively as ever, The Associated Press reports.
This became evident when WEEI radio asked New England quarterback Tom Brady about the HBO show “Hard Knocks,” starring the Jets.
“Honestly, I haven't turned it on,” Brady sniffed. “I hate the Jets, so I refuse to support that show.”
That wasn’t exactly a Brandon Phillips-level outburst, but it got the attention of Jets coach Rex Ryan.
“Hell, he knows we hate the Patriots, so what's the difference?” Ryan quipped.
Rex noted that his brother Rob Ryan, a former Patriots assistant coach, is a bigger Brady fan than he is.
“My brother's got a couple of Super Bowl rings,” Rex said. “He loves Tom Brady, but I don't have them, so I don't like Tom Brady. I respect him, but I don't like him.”
MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE
Questions to ponder while wondering if long-struggling Kyle Lohse is finally headed back on the right track:
Will Tiger Woods get his career back on track now that his much-publicized divorce is final?
And what is up next for his attractive ex-wife?
Isn't it cute when Little League players go off on umpires?
Is this any way for a college football player's career to end?
So what is Sammy Sosa up to these days?
Wouldn't it be fun to have a really wealthy father?
QUIPS ‘R US
Here is what some of America’s leading sports pundits have been writing:
Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel: “Rex Ryan has dropped so many F-bombs on HBO's ‘Hard Knocks’, he should become a Jet Blue flight attendant.”
Norman Chad, syndicated columnist: “How did the greatest golfer of his generation - potentially the best of all-time - go from birdie machine to broken man? Well, at some point, Tiger forgot that he puts on his pants one leg at a time, just like everyone else. Actually -- more to the point -- I guess he forgot that he takes off his pants one leg at a time, just like everyone else.”
Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “Marlins had won four in a row before Saturday, but overshadowing that was the MLB suspension of Ronny Paulino for using a banned performance-enhancing substance. Paulino blamed a diet pill, and that diet pill sure worked. The Marlins lost 250 pounds of catcher overnight.”
Jerry Greene, ESPN.com: “In Boston, denial is the prevalent mood among the Sox. Said David Ortiz: ‘For what we've been going through this year, we're not doing that bad.’ Curiously, that was the same thing Gen. Custer said in his final press conference before his engagement at Little Bighorn.”
Terrence Moore, FanHouse: “If somebody looked deep behind all of the ivy, they might discover that Wrigley Field is the unofficial home of Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Michael Myers, the Blair Witch and Jason. Scarier than that, we know the Cubs' little house of horrors features the worst baseball you'll ever see over a series of years. Their forefathers clearly did something to a werewolf -- or dare I say a billy goat -- to cause all of this.”

“I pull for the Giants, too, except when we play them. This is still my son’s team, the team he grew up with. ... I hope we both make it, us and the Giants. It’s hard to pull against friends.”
Reds manager Dusty Baker.
