Steve Spagnuolo's interview transcript today, courtesy of the St. Louis Rams PR department:
Opening remarks: "Real quick, I don't know if you guys saw at the end there that (S) Darian Stewart just kind of dinged his shoulder so (Head Athletic Trainer) Reggie (Scott) is going to take him in and look at it. Other than that, Reggie thought that (OT) Jason Smith did pretty good today. He just did the individual (practice) and then he went over and did some conditioning with (Strength Coach) Rock (Gullickson), but he felt good. Again, we're treading a little lightly on that one. We want to get him completely healthy and get rolling. Other than that, I think everybody else is pretty much status quo or just about like yesterday, so no real updates. We've got three practices under our belt, they've got a meeting here right now, and then they've got some time off until we have a team meeting tonight. Tomorrow we're rolling."
On Jason Smith potentially being held out of practice this morning: "The plan was for that anyway and then, you know, he said it's OK. If we didn't get, ‘I'm fine' we just say look let's back it off from here. He's getting the things in the meeting room and he's getting the physical stuff from a conditioning standpoint, so we're good with that."
On how close Jason Smith is to taking the next step: "I don't know that. I'd just be speculating. I really don't know. These things can be kind of funny. We're talking about a toe and it's a big guy, so I don't know."
On G Roger Allen's progress: "Obviously he had a setback having the injury at the end of the year and he missed all of the spring. Roger's a competitor. I look at what he did in the rehab and it makes us real confident, but realistically he has missed a lot of football. It might even be that he's back to square one. He's got a little bit under his belt because he was here for a good chunk of it last season. I don't know we'll see. He has got to get back in there. Right now, even though he's out there practicing it's really basically part of his rehab. It's the best rehab you can have, going out and doing the real football. I talked with him about that the other day. He's doing pretty good to this point."
On the intensity of training camp so far: "There were moments I thought the tempo could have been a little bit faster. There's little things when you run these deals. We have three linebackers and that's it, so I've got to remember that. You're trying to get the tempo high, but you've got three guys running every play. That's why we kind of have the water breaks all the time. When we get rocking and rolling with the whole crew I'll probably feel a little bit better."
On whether having the full squad tomorrow pumps him up: "Yeah a little extra juice, no question. I'm feeling that already."
On if it should be a big deal that rookie QB Sam Bradford has missed this time: "Well, we all need all the time. I needed the time to get up to speed. It'll just be a crash course. He's a sharp enough guy. If we feed him and he pulls one of those all-nighters, he'll be OK."
On if he has expectations for Bradford to arrive tonight: "Really nothing has changed since yesterday. When I see Kevin I say, ‘Just give me one word, I'm looking for D-O-N-E' and when I don't get that I say OK I've got to go to practice."
On rookie WR Mardy Gilyard's practice: "Yeah I thought he did a nice job. He's been doing real good. He's battling a little wrist thing. He's got a brace on there, but he fights right through it. (Wide receiver coach) Nolan (Cromwell) is doing a great job and all those wideouts. I kind of spent a little bit more time over there. I thought they all worked well today."
On the young tight ends: "We're very hopeful with those two guys, Mike (Hoomanawanui) and Fendi (Onobun). They flash, they do some good things. Like every rookie, they make some mistakes. To this point, (Tight End Coach) Frank (Leonard), (Offensive Coordinator) Pat (Shurmur) and myself really have a little bit of excitement about those two guys. We'll see where they go from here to wherever we get them to."
On if Onobun is looking more like a football player: "Yeah, he's a wonderful guy. He's so eager, he's bright-eyed. Real hopeful with him."
On Hoomanawanui's various nicknames: "Everybody's got a different name for Mike because nobody can pronounce the last one."
On if Hoomanawanui has surprised him: "He does. I was watching last night, sitting in there...maybe it was Bruce who was sitting. He's a very natural catcher, I think. He's done a lot of that at Illinois and obviously was successful at it. That sticks right out. There's a lot going into playing tight end in the NFL, so he's got a lot to learn. He's an eager guy."
On Gilyard being humble in interviews: "That's pretty evident by what he said and where he's come from and what he's done. He's a character guy, loves playing the game of football. That's a good thing."
