Four games in, Banks Era begins

Steve Walsh began the season as the first-team quarterback. But after the Rams opened 1-2, coach Rich Brooks decided to go with rookie Tony Banks, a second-round draft choice, the rest of the way.

Firmly entrenched as the starter, Banks threw for a career-high 3,254 yards. But his success was sporadic. He completed just 51.7 percent of his passes, and the Rams won only two of their first 10 games.

With Banks traded in the offseason and Trent Green suffering a season-ending knee injury in an exhibition game, little-known Kurt Warner took over. And made history. Warner threw for a league-high 41 TDs and was MVP of the NFL and Super Bowl.

With Warner leading the NFL in virtually every passing category — and earning another league MVP award — the Rams steamed into the Super Bowl as two-TD favorites. Warner threw for 365 yards, but New England pulled off a 20-17 upset.

The Bulger era gets its start

The transition from Warner to Marc Bulger began. Finger and hand injuries limited Warner to six starts, and the Rams lost all six games. Bulger missed two games with a finger injury but produced six wins in his seven starts.

Warner regained the No. 1 job, but after he fumbled six times and suffered a concussion in an opening-week loss, coach Mike Martz turned to Bulger. He started the final 15 games. Warner was released the following June.

Rams struggle without Bulger

The Rams were leading the NFC West when a bruised shoulder sidelined Bulger for two games. With Chris Chandler tossing eight interceptions, the Rams lost both contests by a combined 51-14 count.

A shoulder injury, sustained when he tried to make a tackle after an interception, kept Bulger out of eight games. Jamie Martin stepped in but suffered a concussion in his first game, giving rookie Ryan Fitzpatrick three starts.

Under new coach Scott Linehan, Bulger started all 16 games for the first — and only — time, and had his best season. He topped the 4,000-yard mark in passing yards and threw for 24 TDs vs. just eight INTs, and made his second Pro Bowl.

A rib injury and a concussion kept Bulger on the sideline for four games. His replacement, Gus Frerotte, injured his shoulder, paving the way for Brock Berlin's only career start. The Rams never recovered after starting 0-8.

After four games, the Rams were winless and Bulger had been benched. By the next Sunday, Linehan had been fired and Bulger had been reinstated by interim coach Jim Haslett. The Rams won their next two games before dropping their last 10.

Bulger missed two early games with a shoulder injury and then the last six after fracturing a shin bone. No. 2 QB Kyle Boller was slowed by a thigh bruise and a concussion, shoving rookie Keith Null into the starting role for the last four games.
