The St. Louis Rams’ first practice of training camp ran nearly 90 minutes this morning. Participating were about 40 rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans.
“Selected veterans” basically includes players who are coming off injuries suffered either last season or during the offseason. The Rams have about 10 such players, and none suffered a setback in the opening practice.
“For the most part, I thought they fought through pretty good,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “Maybe we’ll shut some guys down this afternoon just to tread lightly. We’ll just do it player by player.”
The weather was warming rapidly, to Spagnuolo’s delight.
“It was pretty warm out here, which was a good thing,” he said. “But we’re going to try to make sure we don’t wear these guys out and then get to the first (full-squad) practice on Saturday and have a third of the team not feeling good. But we’re getting some work done, and that’s a good thing.”
QB Sam Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, has not signed a contract with the team and wasn’t on the field. Spagnuolo said there was “no real change” in Bradford’s status.
“Like every other head coach, you want your players here. But I understand the process,” Spagnuolo said. “All I ask Kevin (Demoff, the Rams’ executive vice president of football operations) is, ‘Is it done?’ And then I go from there.”
All for now…
