Sophomore Bri'on Sanders scored touchdowns on a run from scrimmage, a pass reception and an interception return as the visiting Webster Groves junior-varsity football team routed Kirkwood High's JV 40-14 today in the 98th Turkey Day Game.
The victory gives the Statesmen a 53-40-5 lead in the oldest high school football rivalry west of the Mississippi, and retains the Frisco Bell trophy for Webster Groves High.
The junior-varsity teams competed because the Kirkwood varsity is playing Staley for the Missouri Class 5 championship Saturday night at the Edward Jones Dome.
Kirkwood has never won a state football championship. Webster Groves has won the state title four times.
The Statesmen defense actually outscored the Pioneers by itself. In addition to Sanders' 52-yard pick-six, sophomore Chaz Pool returned a fumble recovery for a TD and sophomore Dorsey Lawrence returned an interception 50 yards for a score.
A sun-splashed crowd estimated at 3,000 attended the game.
