A University of Missouri recruit, as a middle linebacker, Scherer was the ABC League co-player of the year (with Burroughs running back Ezekiel Elliott) after an outstanding season as a running back and linebacker. He rushed for 1,324 yards and 24 touchdowns, caught 22 passes for 370 yards and four scores and racked up 92 tackles, four interceptions, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
