A Northwestern University recruit, McHugh was an explosive two-way player who helped Kirkwood to a 12-1 record and a runner-up finish in Missouri Class 5. He caught 33 passes for 980 yards, an average of 29.7 per reception, and 16 touchdowns. He ran for 48 yards and a score, had three scores on returns for a total of 20 touchdowns.
