Basketball roundup: Borgia boys, girls win titles at Union

Bryce Dolan and Jacob Martin had 11 points apiece as Borgia knocked off Sullivan 44-33 for the Class 4 District 9 boys basketball title Friday night in Union.

Borgia, ranked seventh among STLhighschoolsports.com small schools, improved to 22-5 and advances to face Helias Wednesday in sectional action Wednesday at Washington High.

Borgia was the state runner-up in Class 4 a year ago.

Second-seeded Sullivan finished 18-9.

In the girls game at Union, seventh-ranked Borgia (24-3) cruised to a 57-31 win over second-seeded Sullivan (20-7).

Borgia and Helias will also meet in the girls game Wednesday at Washington.

CARROLTON 78, METRO EAST LUTHERAN 60 • In the 1A boys title game at the Hardin-Calhoun Regional, Carrollton took control from the start, outscoring the Knights 20-8 in the first quarter and 20-11 in the second.

Each team finished with four double-figure scorers. Carrollton was paced by Tyler Watson (21) and Jordan Harr (15), while Metro East (19-13) got 20 from Nick Hoff, 13 from Tyler Moore and 12 from Jacob Fanshier. 

ALTON MARQUETTE 25 ROXANA 13 • In a low-scoring Illinois Class 2A boys contest at Wood River, the top-seeded Explorers (28-2) outscored the Shells 9-6 in the second quarter and 10-3 in the fourth for the win.

Marquette, which scored nine of its points from the foul line, was led by D'Tae McMurray (8 points) and Sam Scheiter (7). Hunter Reine scored 10 points for Roxana (22-9). 

LUTHERAN SOUTH 58, PACIFIC 53 • The host Lancers outscored the second-seeded Indians 22-16 in the fourth quarter, earning a spot in Class 4 District 3 boys title game against top-seeded Festus (18-8) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Festus eliminated Hillsboro 72-40 in Friday's other district semifinal.

South (13-14) got 16 points from Parker Van Nest and 14 from Jim Hudson, who made 10 of 13 free throws. The Lancers' Brandon Downey added 10 points.

Pacific finished 17-9 while Hillsboro wrapped up a 16-11 campaign.
