Through a constant, steady rain, the MICDS boy lacrosse team pulled out one its biggest wins of the season.
The Rams travelled to CBC and shocked the Cadets with an 8-7 victory.
The win improved MICDS to 6-3 while CBC dropped to 10-2.
“I’ve been calling them pretty lazy the last few days but I was extremely happy with our effort and defense. We’ve had problems with faceoffs and ground balls and really matching people up and we’ve really focused on it,” MICDS Coach Andy Kay said. “Tonight was a great opportunity in the rain and under the lights to come out and show what they have. Our goals are bigger than this game but it is a great stepping stone.”
Nick Theodoro scored three goals and added an assist for the Rams and goalie Bryce Potter shined all night long
“We have definitely taken some hard loses this year,” Theodoro said. “We knew if we could come out here and do our best we had the talent to win We just worked and worked and worked. The defense got it for us today.”
The Rams led 6-5 going into the fourth quarter when the Cadets’ one-two punch of Gerry Leonard and Corey Briggs struck again. Leonard flipped a pass to Briggs and Briggs, who finished with three goals, buried his shot to tie the game with 10 minutes and 26 minutes left in the game.
But Keith Harbison’s goal followed by an unassisted goal by Theodoro to make it 8-6.
Briggs answered with a goal off a Leonard pass to make it 8-7 with 3:55 to go. CBC would have a decent look in the final seconds but the potential game-tying shot sailed high off the mark.
The Cadets led 2-1 after the first quarter on goals by Greg Heaghney and Briggs.
But MICDS rattled off four goals in the second period.
Theodoro scored an unassisted goal with 9:29 left in the first half to tie things up and less than a minute later, Harbison buried a shot to give the Rams their first lead of the game.
After Graham Guirl tied the game, Mark Holekamp bullied his way for a goal and then scooped up a ground ball and put it away with 6.4 left in the first half that gave the Rams a 5-3 advantage.
