Not much could stop the Borgia JV boys soccer squad from putting together a 13-4-2 season and 10-3-1 record in the AAA conference on the way to being named the Cardinals Featured Team of the Week.
The Knights scored 39 goals on the season while only allowing 13 and added a third-place finish in the AAA conference tournament at the onset of the season.
Borgia and first-year coach Andrew Alfermann put together a squad of mostly underclassmen and held their own in one of the more difficult soccer conferences of the area. Three of Borgia's wins came against Duchesne: on the road, at home and on a neutral site at the conference tournament. Borgia also played city-rival Washington to a 1-1 tie.
Alfermann put an emphasis on defense and early on in the year put such a focus on conditioning that in some practices there was no need for a ball.
“My main focus is always on defense,” Alfermann said.
The tough conditioning put in place by Alfermann prepared the Knights for games down the stretch, allowing the squad to use its speed as an asset for the full time throughout the season.
“One of our main goals was spreading teams out and using our speed as an advantage,” he said.
One of the few blemishes for Borgia included three losses to rival St. Dominic. The Knight's only loss in the conference tournament at the start of the year was a 1-0 loss to St. Dominic on a free kick.
