LADUE • Once it got rolling, there was no stopping the MICDS attack on Friday. Backed by a three-goal performance from senior Allison Weisenfels, the visiting Rams defeated John Burroughs 6-3.
The Rams were patient on the attack all afternoon and really plotted for their scoring opportunities. When they weren't doing that, they were scooping up ground balls and beating the Bombers to 50-50 opportunities.
"I don't think we had it from the start," John Burroughs coach Megan O'Malley said. "We made mistakes early that affected us the rest of the game. MICDS showed up to play today and only a couple of us did. When the whole team doesn't step up it is hard to win."
The win improved the Rams to 7-2 and 3-1 in Metro Women's Athletic Association play.
It was the second loss of the week for Burroughs as it dropped to 7-2 (4-2).
Burroughs was without the services of senior Emily Valli, who, according to coach Megan O'Malley, looks to be gone for the rest of the season due to injury.
Weisenfels scored the Rams first two goals as MICDS led 2-1 at halftime.
MICDS nearly put the game out of reach with a barrage to open the second half.
Anna Clarkson zipped a pass from behind the Bomber net to a cutting Molly Scott who finished things off with a goal with 19 minutes and 36 seconds to play. Nearly four minutes later, Katherine Stone made a nice assist to Weisenfels, whose third goal made it 4-1.
"At halftime we were saying that they were going to come out crazy so we said we would come out crazier," Weisenfels said. "We did everything we could to beat their zone defense. We knew there would be a girl open in the middle and we looked for that isolation."
Claire Rush scored back-to-back goals, the last coming at 6:32 to give MICDS a 6-2 lead.
"We do a great job transitioning all over the field," Weisenfels said. "Everything kind of flows out evenly. We have defenders with goals."
The Bombers got a first half goal from Charlotte Martin, her 24th of the season. Jordan Schott and Stephanie Kelly reached the back of the net in the second half.
"Our second effort through midfield and our defense is what made the difference for us," MICDS coach Meghan DiGiulio said.
MICDS will have another stout test on Monday against Cor Jesu.
"Every game we can rely on everybody," DiGiulio said. "That's what's special about this group."
