The deluge of rain in the area has bounced around the Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association girls state tournament.
But if everything goes as planned, the state semifinals will be played tomorrow (Thursday).
In the quarterfinals, scheduled for Tuesday, No. 1 seed Nerinx Hall was set to play No. 9 Ladue. The winner of that contest will meet the winner of No. 4 Lafayette vs. No. 5 MICDS. Those two teams will face off on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., at MICDS.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed John Burroughs and No. 10 Villa Duchesne will take on the winner of No. 3 Ursuline and No. 6 St. Joe's. That semifinal will be on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., at John Burroughs.
The state championship is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Lindenwood. The third place game is slated for 2 p.m.
Big win for St. Joe
The Angels took advantage of one more opportunity to face its rival Nerinx Hall.
In the regular season finale last Wednesday, junior Susie Meskill's goal with 2:40 left ended a second-half rally that gave St. Joe's a 7-6 win.
"We were intimidated coming in but we pulled together. Our offense and defense was working awesome and it showed. It was probably our best game of the season. It was great to end the regular season on this," St. Joe senior captain Katlin Davis said. "We had a lot of drive and with this being our last game on our home field we wanted to end it well."
The victory sent a statement that the Angels are a team to keep an eye on in post-season play.
"This was huge. They put all of their heart and soul into proving that they're not the No. 6 team in the state," St. Joe's Coach Jen Bisch said. "This makes our record look a little bit better. This was fun to win one ourselves by one."
More on the Markers
As the regular season came to a close, Nerinx Hall was the state's top-ranked team.
The Markers can get it done on both sides of the field, averaging 11 goals while only allowing six a game.
"We have girls who can shoot and score really well and work off of each other," Nerinx Hall Coach Jody Patterson said. "When they play as a team and communicate on the field, they're unstoppable on defense. When we do that, I don't think anyone can beat us."
