FIRST TEAM
Jodi Chapie, Incarnate Word
Goalkeeper, Senior
Notes: A two-year starter, Chapie played a key role in the Red Knights' championship run in 2009 and was solid again this spring, finishing with 11 wins, seven shutouts and a goals-against average under 1.00. She has good size and skills and should continue to improve as a college keeper at Quincy.
Jenn Fryrear, St. Joseph's
Defender, Senior
Notes: A four-year starter and the backfield anchor for a team that allowed just 12 goals and finished 20-1. Fryrear has a scholarship to the University of Arkansas. She reads the game extremely well from the centerback spot and is difficult to get around. Coach Maureen McVey said Fryrear plays the game with a "quiet confidence."
Cindy Lackey, Francis Howell North
Defender, Senior
Notes: A third-team selection as a junior, Lackey was as steady as they come in the back, helping the Knights to 17 wins and 11 shutouts this spring. Lackey also chipped in with a goal and four assists. Cindy and twin Becky, a second-team All-Metro midfielder, were co-players of the year in the GAC South and will play next year at Central Missouri.
Tiffany Laughlin, Pattonville
Defender, Senior
Notes: Moving up from the second team, Laughlin was the driving force as Pattonville reached the Class 3 title game this year after finishing third in 2009. Her shift from the midfield to the backfield helped the Pirates win 12 of 13 games down the stretch. A Missouri State recruit, Laughlin also contributed 15 goals and six assists.
Michelle Auer, Notre Dame
Midfielder, Junior
Notes: A dynamic attacking midfielder, Auer is dangerous any time she has the ball at her feet. A third-team All-Metro choice in 2008 and 2009, she helped the Rebels reach the Class 2 title match for the second time in three seasons, following up on a fourth-place finish last year. Auer, who has committed to SIUE, led a young Notre Dame squad with 28 goals and 12 assists this spring.
Kelsey Dinges, Althoff
Midfielder, Junior
Notes: With 39 goals and a state-record 44 assists, Dinges teamed with two-time Player of the Year Megan Pawloski to form the most dangerous one-two scoring duo the area has ever developed. Dinges, who has committed to Miami University in Ohio, has an uncanny ability to read the game and, despite standing just 5 feet 6, is lethal on head balls.
Kelley Gravlin, Incarnate Word
Midfielder, Senior
Notes: A repeat first-team selection, Gravlin struggled to stay healthy but developed into a true leader for the Red Knights, who won state in 2008 and 2009 and finished second in 2007. One of those rare players who seems to raise the level of play for everyone around them, Gravlin led IWA with six goals this season and will continue her career at the University of Memphis.
Jenny Hummert, St. Joseph's
Midfielder, Senior
Notes: A true linking midfielder, Hummert was the Angels' most consistent player this season, controlling the action from penalty area to penalty area. The Post-Dispatch Player of the Year in field hockey, Hummert had five goals and seven assists this spring and will play next year at St. Louis University.
Kristin Bright, Rockwood Summit
Forward, Senior
Notes: The Suburban South Conference Player of the Year, Bright makes the step up after securing third-team honors as a junior. Despite drawing plenty of defensive attention, Bright finished the season with 20 goals, including nine game-winners, and nine assists. A Central Missouri recruit, Bright boosted her confidence and her game with offseason weight training.
Mariah Gove, Hazelwood West
Forward, Sophomore
Notes: This explosive youngster often provided the spark on a veteran squad that finished 25-2. Blessed with great speed, skill and an ability to read the game to find openings in the defense, Gove led the Wildcats with 26 goals and 22 assists this spring. The 5-foot-2 forward had 23 goals and 13 assists as a freshman.
Rachel Tejada, Triad
Forward, Junior
Notes: "In my mind, she was the best player in the area, and that's no disrespect to Megan Pawloski and Kelsey Dinges," Triad coach Mike Villa said. "Rachel was always double- and triple-teamed, but she still found a way to get the ball to the goal." Tejada, who led the area with 13 game-winning goals, scored 39 times and picked up 17 assists this spring. She had 25 goals and 10 assists as a freshman and 27 goals and 15 assists in her sophomore season.
