JEFFERSON CITY • Lauren Waterbury just might be superhuman.
The senior dynamo from MICDS spent her Saturday at the Class 3 state championship track meet here at Dwight T. Reed Stadium dominating all four, count'em four, events she entered.
Waterbury began her morning with a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 5 inches.
She then went out and anchored the championship 800-relay team. Then she raced to state titles in the open 400 and 200.
All by herself, Waterbury accounted for 40 of MICDS' 71 points as the Rams brought home their first state championship. Festus was second with 45. Lincoln College Prep was third with 36. Affton finished fourth with 31.
"I wish the coaching staff could take credit for her but she's such a competitor and she doesn't like to lose," MICDS coach Jim Lohr said.
Lohr said the motivation for this season's championship was born on the bus ride back to St. Louis last year. The Rams didn't have the meet they had expected. Things didn't go their way and they finished sixth.
Waterbury had a fistful of runner-up medals and wasn't happy about it. So the team went to work with Waterbury leading the charge.
"She's the glue," Lohr said. "She holds us all together."
"It's absolutely amazing," Waterbury said of reaching the top of the podium. "We've all been working so hard."
Festus got an impressive weekend out of senior Sadie Darnell. After winning the 3,200 relay by a nose on Friday she came back and medaled in the 1,600 with a sixth-place finish.
Junior Breanne Borman was second in the 100 hurdles, sixth in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the long jump. Senior Dani Borman was seventh in the 100 hurdles.
Affton was paced by an outstanding day by junior Hali Ford.
"She was Superman," Affton coach Tim Hill said.
Ford won the triple jump on Friday and the 100 hurdles on Saturday. She also was dynamite in the 800 relay.
Junior Cheyenne Hoerr was fourth in the 400 and junior Taylor Porter was eighth in the 100.
