The North Division hammered the South 12-4 in the MVCHA 2A all-star game Monday at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights.

The North team included players from Alton, Edwardsville and Granite City. Pattonville, a St. Louis County team, also had a representative on the North squad. The South team consisted of players from O'Fallon, Belleville East, Belleville West and Althoff.

The North iced the game with a six-goal second period that gave it a 7-0 lead.

The game started with things going back and forth. Goalies Justin Lewis (O'Fallon) for the South and Loren Sawyer (Edwardsville) for the North both came up with some excellent saves in the opening period. The only score came at 7 minutes 32 seconds when Granite City's Nick Sabol beat the South's Lewis (O'Fallon). Assists went to Pattonville's Joe Kavanaugh and Granite City's Ryan Tinsley.

The second period was where things got wild. The North opened with goals by Granite City's Matt Burton at 15:05 and Max Cobb at 9:56 and then picked up three goals in 22 seconds to power to a 6-0 lead.

The line of Kavanaugh, Sabol and Edwardsville's Jon Weisner accounted for all three blink-of-an-eye goals. Weisner scored at 7:22, and Kavanaugh popped in goals at 7:13 and 7:06.

The North wrapped up the scoring in the second period at 3:55 when Tinsley scored on a blast from the left point.

Cameron Barton of Granite City recorded a perfect period in goal for the North.

Kavanaugh completed the hat trick at 4:47 in the third period, pushing the lead to 8-0. Third-period goals by Austin Rauscher (Alton), Cobb, Jorey Skelton (Alton) and Sabol completed the North's offensive showcase.

Althoff's Sam Yauch scored a hat trick in the third period for the South. Belleville East defenseman Zach Thompson wrapped up the scoring.

Sixteen North players recorded a point in the win. Kavanaugh finished with three goals and three assists, and Sabol scored two and assisted on three.
