SPRINGFIELD, Mo. • In the end, Webb City had too many bats for Eureka to contain in the third-place game Friday at the Class 4 state softball championships.
Webb City dealt Eureka its second loss of the day in the third-place game, winning 12-5.
Eureka, which fell to Troy 10-5 in the semifinals earlier Friday, closes its season at 23-7. Webb City wraps up 2011 at 29-4.
Eureka seemed to be clicking early. The Wildcats scored single runs in the first and second innings, but things unraveled when Webb City scored six times in the bottom of the second.
Webb City slugged two home runs in the second inning, including a grand slam by Kaitlin Beeson.
First baseman Jenny Weiss had a big game for Eureka, going two for four with two RBIs.
Alana Hester, one of two senior starters who helped the Wildcats to their first final four berth since 1999, said the trip to the state tournament is the highlight of her career.
"It means so much senior year to be coming here," she said. "I never thought in my four years of playing that this would have happened. It's really special."
