The Blues have agreed to terms with goaltender Jaroslav Halak, signing him to a four-year, $15 million contract. The cap hit will be $3.75 million per season.
Halak, 25, was acquired June 17 in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens. He had been a restricted free agent as of July 1 and declined to elect salary arbitration by yesterday's deadline.
A source close to the situation said that Halak's camp wanted to negotiate with the Blues without any deadlines attached. The two sides continued negotiations and today have announced the four-year deal.
Halak will be the Blues' starting goaltender when training camp opens in September.
In other news today:
One day after filing for salary arbitration, Blues forward Cam Janssen has agreed to a one-year, $600,000 contract extension with the club.
Janssen was one of 31 NHL players to file for arbitration Monday, but after doing so, his agent, Scott Norton, said he believed that the two sides could reach an agreement before the case went to arbitration.
After Janssen met personally with the Blues this morning, Norton was able to work out the one-year extension.
D.J. King, the Blues' other enforcer, is a restricted free agent. He did not file for arbitration.
Meanwhile, the two-year extension for defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo is expected to be made official this afternoon.
