The Blues will know soon whether forward Chris Stewart will face further discipline from the NHL after his major penalty in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Detroit.

Stewart has a phone hearing scheduled with the league at 10 a.m. this morning regarding his hit on the Red Wings' Niklas Kronwall.

In the first period Tuesday, Stewart was whistled for “checking from behind” when he pushed Kronwall into the boards, earning a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Kronwall left the game after the hit, but returned for the start of the second period.

"I think I got lucky there," Kronwall told Detroit reporters after the game. "I think it could have ended a lot worse."

Per NHL policy, Kronwall was checked out for a possible concussion, but he apparently had no symptoms.

"They brought me in there just in case, to do all the testing," Kronwall said. "I felt fine ... When you take a hard hit, you feel it's a good impact, but I was fine."

The NHL is cracking down on hits from behind this season. Former Blue Brendan Shanahan, now the league's 'Dean of Discipline', has issued many individual suspensions for questionable checks this season.

Stewart is a first-time offender. He was unavailable for comment after the game.

Asked if he felt it was a hit worthy of suspension, Kronwall said: "I haven't seen the replay, so I can't really say too much, but it felt like he was coming from an angle from behind."

Kronwall's teammates, who had a better view, thought the hit might warrant some time off for Stewart.

"It's tough," goaltender Jimmy Howard said. "It's one of those plays at the beginning of the year they told us they're going to be sticklers on. It's good to see the right call was made."

Add Red Wing Dan Cleary: "Sitting on the bench it was scary to see. (Kronwall) didn't even see (Stewart) behind him. Then when he did see him, Stewart pushed him. It's a dangerous play that far from the boards. You try to let up a little bit."

Blues captain David Backes sensed that the NHL might decide a 5-minute major penalty and Stewart missing the last 49 minutes of the game could be sufficient punishment.

"Kronwall comes back," Backes said. "(Stewart) has already been penalized for five (minutes) and missing the game ... a five-minute power play against Detroit can be a death sentence. I don't know. You look at the criteria put forth. (Stewart) has never been suspended before, never had a hearing before. Kronwall looks injured on the play, but he comes back. Is it an ugly hit? Yeah, it's not pretty. But he's a hard-nosed guy that has to play with that edge to be effective out there."

The Blues will possibly know more Wednesday.
