The NHL signed off on Ilya Kovalchuk's latest deal with the New Jersey Devils, five weeks after rejecting his landmark 17-year, $102 million contract. The league approved a revised 15-year, $100 million deal after reaching an agreement with the NHL Players Association. The NHL had rejected the Devils' initial offer because it violated the league's salary cap. An arbiter upheld that decision after the union filed a grievance. (AP)
Penguins sign Comrie • Pittsburgh signed forward Mike Comrie to a one-year, $500,000 contract. He has scored 20 or more goals five times during nine NHL seasons with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa and the New York Islanders. (AP)
Home opener for SLU soccer • Coming off a season-opening 3-2 loss at New Mexico on Wednesday, the St. Louis University soccer team plays its home opener tonight against 16th-ranked South Florida at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium. Midfielder Mike Roach remains day to day with a leg injury; he didn't play against New Mexico. MSU's Lucious pleads guilty to reckless driving • Michigan State basketball guard Korie Lucious has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving. He originally had been charged with operating while intoxicated after he was pulled over early Monday. Sentencing will be Dec. 20. (AP)
Positive HGH test is a first • A Canadian college football player whose team was suspended in July for the 2010 season because of a steroid scandal has become the first athlete in North America to test positive for human growth hormone. The player, whose name was not released, was discovered after the University of Waterloo tested its entire team in the wake of a player's arrest in the spring on charges of possessing and trafficking of anabolic steroids. HGH is among the hardest performance-enhancing drugs to test for, with no urine test available and a new blood test being developed to augment one currently used. (AP)
Arum's son still missing • Searchers are using dog teams and helicopters to look for John Arum, son of boxing promoter Bob Arum, missing in North Cascades National Park for nearly a week. The younger Arum, 49, an experienced climber, failed to return from a solo weekend trip to climb Storm King mountain, about 85 miles northeast of Seattle. (AP)
Gatlin wins 100 meters in Italy • Justin Gatlin clocked 10.15 seconds to win the 100 meters at a meet near Venice, Italy, in the last race on his return from a four-year doping ban before he goes back to the United States to prepare for the indoor season. Gatlin has also posted victories at three minor meets in Estonia and Finland since being cleared to compete again. (AP)
Petacchi wins Vuelta stage • Alessandro Petacchi of Italy won the seventh stage of the Spanish Vuelta, while Philippe Gilbert of Belgium maintained the overall lead for the fifth straight day. (AP)
