United States trims roster for worlds to 15 • USA Basketball trimmed its roster for the world basketball championships to 15 by cutting Tyreke Evans, Gerald Wallace, O.J. Mayo and JaVale McGee. The moves, coming four days after the completion of the team's minicamp in Las Vegas, come two weeks before the opening of training camp in New York.
More cuts are ahead, as the United States must submit a 12-man roster Aug. 26 — two days before the Americans open pool play against Croatia in Istanbul.
The cuts left the team with six guards (Derrick Rose, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook, Rajon Rondo, Stephen Curry and Eric Gordon); four wingmen (Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Rudy Gay and Danny Granger); three power forwards (Lamar Odom, Kevin Love and Jeff Green); and two centers (Tyson Chandler and Brook Lopez). Pitino says extortion suspect initiated sexual contact • A woman accused of demanding millions to stay quiet about a tryst with Rick Pitino initiated the sex by whispering to him and unzipping his pants when he got up to leave an empty Italian restaurant, he testified Wednesday.
The Louisville coach's testimony marked the first time he's talked publicly in detail about his July 2003 encounter with Karen Cunagin Sypher, the meeting that led to her trial this week on extortion charges. Pitino's portrayal of Sypher as the aggressor came after several witnesses said she was flirty and persistent when she approached Pitino at the restaurant.
Sypher is charged with extortion, asking for cash, cars and a house to stay quiet about the sex. She has pleaded not guilty, claiming Pitino sexually assaulted her. Pitino will return to the witness stand today to face questioning from the defense. (AP)
