Ghana did it again to the United States, though this time on a smaller scale. At the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Germany, Ghana shocked the defending champs with a 1-1 tie in the opening match. Elizabeth Cudjoe scored for Ghana in the 8th minute with a blast from about 30 yards that just caught the left goalpost and banked in.
The Americans couldn't score despite steady pressure until the 69th minute when Teresa Noyola started a break, which ended with Maya Hayes threading a pass to captain Sydney Leroux for the easy tapin, made easier by the fact that Leroux was a couple feet offside. But, in a rare event for American soccer fans, the call went the U.S. team's way, the flag stayed down, and the goal was counted.
Each team had chances in injury time, with U.S. goalie Bianca Henniger making a diving save on a shot that was going in and Ghana getting a clearance a few feet off the line a short while later. The game ended just after a U.S. corner kick nearly produced the game-winner.
It's the first match of the first round, so it's not a fatal result for the U.S. team, and with the top two teams in the group advancing -- Switzerland and South Korea are the other teams -- you still have to expect the U.S. team to get through. They play Switzerland next on Saturday.
The United States has reached the semifinals in the four previous Women's U-20 World Cups.
