Badboy director may repel some fans with 'Antichrist'
Antichrist movie review
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Lars von Trier has been called the bad boy of Danish filmmaking, and he seems determined to live up to his reputation. With his latest film, "Antichrist," the director of "Breaking the Waves" and "Dancer in the Dark" tests the loyalty of fans that may expect his work to be extreme, but not to such an extent.

The story of a tragedy and its violent aftermath, "Antichrist" includes scenes of torture and self-mutilation that may have more than a few folks heading for the exits before it reaches its bizarre conclusion. But the film is also strikingly original and clearly the work of a director who's unafraid to challenge audiences — regardless of the consequences.

Charlotte Gainsbourg ("The Science of Sleep") and Willem Dafoe star as a couple identified as She and He. The death of their child — presented with such artistry that it eclipses the rest of the film — propels She into a severe depression that He can do little to relieve. But things really get intense when they take a trip to the woods. It's not long before He is struggling to free himself of a barbell that She has screwed onto his leg.

But what does it all mean? And why should we care?

"Antichrist" is among Von Trier's more cryptic films, and possibly his most pretentious. Still, like a road catastrophe, it's at once appalling and fascinating.

Gainsbourg was named best actress at this year's Cannes Film Festival for her riveting performance, and Dafoe is equally persuasive as a man who can't believe the mess he's gotten himself into.

No doubt some people will find "Antichrist" repellent. The question is whether you're open to films that are as flawed as they are ambitious.

"Antichrist" may make you uncomfortable, but it's worth seeing as long as you understand that it's not — nor is it intended to be — "Paul Blart: Mall Cop."
