TV's 'Dance' tour waltzes into Chaifetz Arena

Each season of TV's "So You Think You Can Dance" is chock full of water cooler fodder for the many fans of the weekly dance contest. And Season 5, which ended in May with Jeanine Mason crowned "America's best dancer," was no exception. One routine stood above the others from an emotional standpoint, a profound number danced by Ade Obayomi and Melissa Sandvig. It was a piece dedicated to breast cancer survivors, choreographed by Tyce Diorio and performed to Maxwell's "This Woman's Work." By the end of the routine, Obayomi and Sandvig had brought the judges and studio audience to tears. "It was so overwhelming," says Obayomi, a finalist on the show along with Sandvig. "Everyone was crying and speechless, and we got e-mail after e-mail. I had no idea it would hit home with so many people." Ellen DeGeneres, who was a guest judge on "So You Think You Can Dance" during that episode, invited the pair onto her talk show to re-create the dance (and to promote Season 6, airing now). They had good news to share on the show: The woman Diorio had in mind when he conceived the piece has been cancer-free for months. Obayomi says the routine was one of the hardest of the season because they not only had to dance well, but they also had to portray characters dealing with a touching subject matter. "We really had to put ourselves in that situation," says Obayomi, a contemporary dancer. "But it paid off in the end." Obayomi and Sandvig perform the breast cancer routine on the "So You Think You Can Dance" tour, which comes to Chaifetz Arena on Saturday. "We still get into the zone," Obayomi says. "It's at the end of the show, so we've finished the other numbers. But before we do that one, we have a little moment to remember what it's about." Obayomi, also known for his high-flying back flips on the show, describes the tour as "fire." "It's jam-packed with funny jokes and gimmicks here and there, high energy dancing and all the favorites from the season," he says.
