New on DVD: 'Anvil,' 'Monsters vs. Aliens'

NEW MOVIES ON DVD

'Anvil! The Story of Anvil'
½ NR 1:30
Although it seems like a riff on "This Is Spinal Tap," it's an actual documentary about a left-for-dead Canadian heavy-metal band that is revived by their dogged faith and friendship (and by filmmaker-fan Sacha Gervasi). Slyly funny and surprisingly poignant, it's one of the great films about rock 'n' roll. By Joe WIlliams

'Away We Go'
R 1:38
Maya Rudolph ("Saturday Night Live") is terrific in this smart, engaging comedy about a couple deciding where to start their new family. Co-starring John Krasinski ("The Office"), it's a delightful change of pace for director Sam Mendes ("American Beauty"). By Calvin Wilson

'Management'
R 1:34
In a quirky romantic comedy, Jennifer Aniston plays a traveling saleswoman whose nowhere life is invaded by love-struck hotel clerk Steve Zahn. A movie that starts as precious and irritating manages to win us over with its puppy-dog persistence. By Joe Williams

'Monsters vs. Aliens'
½ PG 1:34
An ordinary woman (voice of Reese Witherspoon) who gets conked with a meteorite and turned into a giant joins a misfit army to fend off an alien invader. This lightweight 'toon has some impressive imagery but, without compelling characters or creative smarts, it gets lost in space. By Joe Williams

'Year One'
PG 1:35

Harold Ramis ("Caddyshack") directs the lowbrow misadventures of Old Testament wanderers Jack Black and Michael Cera with the glacial pace and golden sheen of a big-budget biblical epic. By Joe Williams

NEW TV ON DVD

'The Mighty Boosh,' complete series

Two zookeepers, a shaman and a talking ape walked into a flat … No, really. British comics Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding, billed as their generation's Monty Python, created "Boosh" in a series of stage shows that evolved into a radio series and finally made it to television. This set compiles the uniquely nutty, 20-episode TV series, which aired first on the BBC and then on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. By Gail Pennington
