Kids' singer respects his pint-size audiences
![]() Justin Roberts ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Just scraping by as an indie rocker, Justin Roberts took a job as a preschool teacher. There he learned that kids are exhausting, brutally honest and have great taste in music. He and his trio will play material from his latest release, "Pop Fly." You're from Chicago and you've written a song about baseball. Does that mean you're a Cubs fan? I will call myself a Cubs fan. Even better: We have a Red Sox and a White Sox fan in this group. How do you approach writing for a pint-size audience? My favorite things that were made with kids in mind — "The Little Prince," "Where the Wild Things Are," "Schoolhouse Rock" — are good examples of people making high-quality pieces of art for kids or adults. They respect their audience. You're playing at one of St. Louis' best alternative clubs. Do you expect a pre-K crowd-surfing? Kids are so natural that if they hear something they like they'll start dancing even if they are the only one.
