Cornerstones of Diabetes Management

The Delmar Gardens Family strives to provide its residents with any special dietary needs that they may have, including diabetes. Two of the cornerstones of diabetes management — and good health in general — are diet and physical activity.

Delmar Gardens communities offer their residents a wonderful variety of healthy food choices at each meal, three times a day. Whether it is lean meat, fish, or another protein source, they offer a variety of heart-smart options. Fiber is also important and their menus provide this in fresh fruits and vegetables as well as whole grain cereals and breads. They encourage three servings of low-fat dairy products per day to keep bones strong and prevent osteoporosis. And they stress that water, too, is essential with six to eight 8 oz. glasses generally recommended.

Every day, their dietitians, food service managers and other dietary staff in Delmar Gardens communities assist the residents in making great nutrition choices.

The second cornerstone to managing diabetes is physical activity. Regular activity is as important as a healthy eating plan. It helps to manage diabetes, control one's weight, cholesterol and blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Physical activity burns calories and helps lower blood glucose levels so that the body uses food energy more efficiently. Exercise improves blood flow through the small blood vessels and improves the heart's ability to pump.

Generally 30 minutes of exercise per day, 4 to 6 times per week is recommended. With doctor approval, this can be achieved through aerobics, walking, dancing, golfing, playing tennis, swimming, gardening and more. Delmar Gardens offers endless opportunities, such as walking clubs, jazzercise and a variety of wellness programs to promote an active, healthy lifestyle.

Delmar Gardens communities strive to provide residents with important and healthy choices to maintain their independent and active lifestyles, whether they have diabetes, heart disease, obesity or are in the picture of health. Delmar Gardens dedicated staff helps the residents to live their lives to the fullest. After all, isn't that what life is all about!
