Last call for farmers markets
POST-DISPATCH FOOD EDITOR

Saturday marks the end of our seasonal farmers markets, so stock up on long-lasting root vegetables. Stored in a cool, dry, dark place, sweet potatoes will easily make it to Thanksgiving, for example.

The fall crop of greens also is still around, so there's one last week to enjoy a locally grown salad.

Shoppers are likely to find winter squash (including pumpkins), beets, turnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sturdy greens such as kale, collards and mustard, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, radishes, peppers, eggplant, green beans, zucchini, tomatoes and apples.
