How to fix a door that won't stay open

How do I fix a door that keeps closing on its own? It won't stay open, unless we put a stopper in front of it.

— K.T., Ballwin

This is usually a sign that the door is not level anymore and needs to be shimmed. This can be an easy fix.

In most cases all you will need to do is take a level and put it on the doors' edge while the door is slightly open. Check the level and see if the bottom of the door or the top is off level. This will determine which hinge is causing the problem. Take a screwdriver and remove the screws from the hinge on the jamb side of the hinge.

You will need some thin shims to place behind the hinge. Once you do that, replace the screws and check to see if things are level. This should fix the problem.

You also will need to make sure there is nothing hanging off the back of the door. Sometimes when you use over-the-door hooks and hang stuff on the back, it throws the door off balance.
