Two pieces of a jigsaw
Photo (Photos by Kurtis Hall and Whitney Curtis for Nordmann Photography )

“The eggs are ...,” Sarah (Christman) Nordmann said, teasing her new husband, Paul. “ ... runny?” he asked, finishing her sentence, his fake sigh of resignation changing into a smile.

Sarah’s eyes crinkled and her lips pursed as she tried to hide her giggle – unsuccessfully. He makes breakfast – and dinner – every day. Watching Paul cook is a favorite time in her day. She loves talking with him about his plans for the day or what happened at work. She loves just being close to him – connecting.

As for Paul, he loves that Sarah is bubbly, goofy, funny, energetic. Their humor is similar – a little off the wall. But there’s an even more important reason why Paul is just crazy about Sarah.

“It sounds corny, but she makes me a better person,” he said. “We have such a strong relationship.” Sarah nodded in agreement.

Paul, 32, is a photographer for his family’s photo studio, Nordmann Photography, and Sarah, 31, is the assistant head of school at the Soulard School. Over the last 10 years, the couple has grown close. They fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. They finish each other’s sentences, look at each other as if reading each other’s mind, and communicate without talking.

Yet, they are still newlyweds. At their wedding, on Nov. 29, 2008, as a rainbow of light from above streamed through the stained-glass windows of Lucas School House, with only white candles illuminating the hall below, Sarah and Paul took their wedding vows. They were surrounded by their friends and family. Sarah’s uncle Bill performed the ceremony.

The couple relished the intimate nature of the setting. The Soulard Blues Band played. Instead of cake, three flavors of gelato were served. Paul and his groomsmen wore white Jack Purcell tennis shoes.

Sarah and Paul first met at Webster Groves High School, but didn’t start “hanging out” as friends until five years later in the summer of 1999. It took Sarah six months for a first date and a first kiss. That was the night they tried to find Steinberg Skating Rink. Despite driving around and around for more than an hour, they never found it. Instead, they talked, got to know each other and found out how much they had in common. They also found the love of their lives. The couple has traveled through life together ever since – always finding their way to each other’s heart.

By that first date, Paul said, he was already “pretty much hooked” on Sarah. “But I wasn’t ‘hooked,’ ” she said. She had just gotten out of a relationship and didn’t want to jump into another. But Sarah grew to love and depend on Paul’s sense of humor, his sweetness, his strength, humility and quiet confidence. Their bond kept growing stronger and stronger.

When Paul went to Boston for school, their relationship took on greater meaning and depth.

“With him being gone, it made us realize we were meant to live our lives together,” she said lovingly. That’s when they both decided they wanted to celebrate their love. “Even though we were already married in our hearts,” she said. The couple is still planning their honeymoon – a cruise – for their first wedding anniversary.
