Linda Wilson of MoDOT and Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors hold an online chat each Wednesday about Highway 40 (Interstate 64) construction and other highway issues. Submit questions at STLtoday.com/discussions. Here is an excerpt from last week: Brian: Will some sort of barrier be installed where the Interstate 170 south to Interstate 64 west flyover bridge connects to I-64? It seems like that could be an accident hot spot once I-64 opens (say if a driver loses control of a vehicle as it is coming down the ramp onto I-64 west). Linda Wilson: Yes. There will be a crash barrier installed at the point where southbound I-170 splits to have the left lane go to eastbound I-64 and the right lane go to westbound I-64. The ramp will get restriped to one lane and the barrier installed before we open the highway. Carlos: I've heard that "the reconstruction of Highway I-64 and U.S. 40, between I-170 and Kingshighway …, is expected to be completed just before Thanksgiving, according to a reliable source with the project." Is this true? Linda Wilson: We do not know who this "source" is and it did not come from MoDOT or the contractor. We will say again, we do not have a date yet and we will not announce a date until we get to November. I guess that means another three-plus weeks of rumors and speculations. You won't hear a date from us for at least several more weeks. Rick: The travel safe zone that was established on I-64 between Mason and Ballas, is it only in the eastbound lanes or are the westbound lanes included also? The reason I ask the question is that I don't see any signage in the westbound lanes like I do in the eastbound lanes. Linda Wilson: The travel safe zone on I-64 is only eastbound from Mason to Ballas. The eastbound lanes have a much higher crash rate and therefore the Town and Country police are focusing their enforcement efforts on that area.
