Two police bullets felled Thornton, autopsy finds
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
KIRKWOOD — An autopsy showed that Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton was struck twice by police bullets to end his deadly shooting rampage Feb. 7 at Kirkwood City Hall. Thornton fired all six rounds from the revolver and an unspecified number of shots from the .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol he took after killing police Sgt. William Biggs near City Hall, Panus said. There were some shots still left in the police weapon. Panus declined to discuss how many shots were fired by the two Kirkwood officers who killed the gunman. Besides Biggs, Thornton killed Officer Thomas Ballman, Councilwoman Connie Karr, Councilman Michael H.T. Lynch and Public Works Director Ken Yost. Mayor Mike Swoboda was critically wounded, and Suburban Journals reporter Todd Smith was less seriously hurt. Thornton was a familiar figure at council meetings, where he repeatedly protested parking and ordinance violation citations, and was twice arrested for disorderly conduct. He recently lost a federal lawsuit challenging limits put on his comments at the meetings. Thornton's funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at the Kirkwood United Methodist Church, 201 West Adams Avenue.
