Southeast's Mass Communication program among the elite
![]() COLLEGE CONNECTION MAGAZINE
Southeast Missouri State University’s mass communication program is now among esteemed company. The program holds both Certification in Education for Public Relations and accreditation through the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. This makes Southeast’s mass communication program one of just 10 nationwide with both CEPR and ACEJMC accreditation. Southeast has Missouri’s only certified public relations program and is one of just two programs in the state accredited in mass communication. Southeast’s mass communication program received its CEPR designation from the Public Relations Society of America in 2006, and accreditation through ACEJMC in 2005. After program reviews were completed for the 2008-2009 academic year, 113 schools now hold accreditation from the ACEJMC, and 20 hold PRSA/CEPR designation. The other nine programs with both credentials can be found at the University of Alabama, Cal State-Fullerton, Ball State, Indiana University, Western Kentucky University, University of Maryland, University of Memphis, Brigham Young and Virginia Commonwealth. Dr. Susan Gonders, Southeast professor of mass communication, said both review processes included examination of curriculum, resources, facilities, faculty qualifications and university support. Meetings are conducted with faculty, administrators, students and program advisors, and the team observes classes and lab work in progress. The site-visit team also contacted area professionals, alumni and internship providers to confirm the quality of the program. ACEJMC accreditation and PRSA/CEPR certification are both subject to review every six years to assure that high standards are maintained. When Dr. Dan Lattimore, a dean at the University of Memphis, chaired the team conducting the rigorous on-site review for the ACEJMC accreditation, he said the visit to Southeast was the "smoothest," "easiest" and "best organized" of the 19 site visits in which he has participated in the last decade. "If anything," he concluded, "they are in over-compliance." Southeast will be reviewed for reaccreditation in the fall of 2010 and for recertification in the spring of 2012 -- Southeast Missouri State University
