Missouri Baptist University: New Doctor of Education degree begins this fall
COLLEGE CONNECTION MAGAZINE
Marking a significant milestone, Missouri Baptist University will begin offering its first terminal degree this August. The MBU Doctor of Education will couple theoretical framework with practical application to form a program tailored for superintendents, curriculum specialists and teachers. The field-based program seeks to challenge educators who desire to be change agents in the pre-kindergarten-12 environment. The need for such a program in the Midwest has never been greater, according to Arlen Dykstra, MBU’s provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “The introduction of the MBU Doctor of Education will have great implications in St. Louis and beyond as we begin offering a program that not only allows educators to be exposed to time-tested theoretical instruction, but also prompts them to engage in practical application needed to be at the forefront of educational leadership,” said Dykstra. Because curriculum included in this terminal degree builds on the MBU Educational Specialist program, applicants for the Ed.D. must first complete this program; an additional 21 hours are required to complete the doctorate. Those credits are tied to theoretical knowledge and focus on contemporary practices with an orientation toward research. The Higher Learning Commission granted approval in April for MBU to offer courses toward the Doctor of Education. For information about the new program, contact the MBU Office of Graduate Studies at 314-392-2327 or via e-mail at graduateadmissions@mobap.edu. -- Missouri Baptist University
