McKendree University: Quality is affordable
COLLEGE CONNECTION MAGAZINE

At McKendree University, we emphasize Responsible citizenship, Engagement, Academic excellence and Lifelong learning -- education for the REAL world.

McKendree ranks among the top 10 percent of "Best Baccalaureate Colleges” in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2009." For the third consecutive year, we are the only Illinois and St. Louis area school in the category to earn the magazine’s “Great Schools, Great Prices” ranking in the Midwest region’s top ten.

Our commitment to opportunity for first-generation, low-income and minority students earned a place among 225 schools in the inaugural 2008-09 College Access & Opportunity Guide.

Small classes allow personal attention from our outstanding faculty members, who truly care about our students’ and their success. More than half of our classes have 15 or fewer students and over 90 percent of our professors have the highest degrees in their fields. We offer six bachelor degree programs in 37 major areas of study.

Our peaceful campus is a mix of historic buildings and state-of-the-art facilities in quaint Lebanon, Illinois. We are located near Interstate 64, 25 miles from downtown St. Louis, convenient to major attractions, entertainment and shopping.

Undergraduate enrollment is about 1,300. Most students come from Illinois, but 10 other states and several countries are represented, too. On-campus living options range from traditional residence halls to apartment-style living for upperclassmen.

In Fall 2008, McKendree welcomed its third largest first-year class in its 180-year history. They are academic achievers, with an average high school grade point of 3.5 and ACT score of 24, higher than the 21.2 national average. Half received an academic-based merit scholarship, and 94 percent received need-based financial aid, an academic scholarship or both.

We strive to make a McKendree education financially possible for every student we admit. We know every family’s financial circumstances are different; as a result, we can explore options for assistance that will meet your particular needs.

Whatever your interest -- political, environmental, community related, musical, athletic, cultural, dramatic, creative or literary -- we encourage you to get involved outside the classroom. Our McKendree Bearcats compete in 20 varsity sports -- 11 men’s and nine women’s -- through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Community service, both local and international, is an important part of a McKendree education. Many students volunteer at nursing homes, churches, parks and animal shelters through the school's award-winning Center for Public Service.

The Russel E. and Fern M. Hettenhausen Center for the Arts -- known as “The Hett -- is Southern Illinois’ premier performing arts venue, presenting music, dance and theater. Check thehett.com for upcoming events.

Graduate degrees are offered in education, professional counseling, business administration and nursing, with evening and online classes available. Accelerated Instruction with McKendree (AiM) is a convenient, flexible and affordable option for adults seeking to further their education while maintaining work, family and local commitments close to home.
