COLLEGE CONNECTION MAGAZINE

The University of Missouri–St. Louis is a dynamic public metropolitan research university with more than 15,000 students. It consistently offers education of the highest quality, excellent learning experiences and leadership opportunities through its outstanding faculty, ranked programs, innovative research and community partnerships.

Financial Aid

UMSL students will receive nearly $100 million in financial aid from the university and other sources during the upcoming academic year.

UMSL has frozen tuition and put more money into financial aid. We’re doing everything we can to ensure St. Louis-area residents have
access to the wonderful educational opportunities available here.

Academic Excellence

UMSL is one of the finest public research institutions in the nation. Here are just a few of its academic accomplishments:

The College of Education at UMSL ranks first in Missouri for the number of certificates issued annually to teaching professionals.

The College of Nursing is proud that the first-time pass rate on the licensing exam for graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has exceeded 90 percent for the past six years, higher than state and national averages.

UMSL’s Criminology and Criminal Justice doctoral degree program has ranked fourth in the United States (2009 U.S. News & World Report).

The College of Business Administration’s International Business program was ranked 16th nationally (2008 U.S. News & World Report), the sixth consecutive year the program ranked in the top 20.

The College of Fine Arts and Communication, through its endowed professorships, links the university to the Saint Louis Symphony, the Saint Louis Art Museum, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Laumeier Sculpture Park and other organizations.

The Pupil Project, the only program in the U.S. jointly sponsored between a college of optometry and a college of education, blends the resources and expertise of the UMSL faculty to manage learning-related vision problems for children.

The College of Optometry administers the only professional training program for optometrists in Missouri and is just one of 17 ASCO member institutions in North America that awards the degree Doctor of Optometry.

The Pierre Laclede Honors College offers the following opportunities for students:

− Academic and residential scholarships awarded on admission and renewable for all Honors students in good standing, including both freshmen and transfer students.

− Instruction entirely in small-discussion seminars and one-on-one independent study (faculty-student ratio is 1:13).

− A challenging, engaging honors curriculum, which, whatever students’ majors, meets graduation requirements in general education, global awareness, cultural diversity and American government, and includes opportunities for research and internships.

− Individual courses taught by experienced instructors, among the university’s best, who volunteer to teach in the Honors College.

A writing program that begins with students’ admissions essays and continues through a senior-year capstone where faculty also help students in their applications for graduate schools, professional programs and first jobs.

Athletics: The Tritons

The UMSL Tritons compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at the NCAA Division II level. The university fields 11 athletic teams and offers scholarships in each sport. Men’s sports are baseball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis. Women’s sports are basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.

Residential Opportunities

UMSL features residence halls, student apartments and Mansion Hill condominiums for students with diverse interests to enjoy a real sense of community. Oak Hall, a $26 million facility, is the most recent residential facility on campus. It even features an outdoor heated swimming pool!

Alumni Network

The University of Missouri–St. Louis has more alumni who live and work in the St. Louis area than any other university – more than 54,000 strong. – University of Missouri-St. Louis
