SIUC offers admissions options

Victoria Valle, the new assistant vice chancellor for enrollment management for Southern Illinois University Carbondale, returns to the Midwest to join SIUC with over thirty years’ experience in the enrollment management field.

SIUC has a wide variety of unique programs and a history of providing higher-education access to under-represented and low-income students as well as to top students in their classes. “That’s what attracted me to SIUC,” Valle says. SIUC offers innovative programs that are not available at many other schools. “Literally we have everything from accounting, aerospace studies and aviation to workforce development and zoology,” Valle adds.

“Currently, we review student files along a continuum of class rank and ACT score combination. However, students shouldn’t be discouraged from applying to SIUC because they appear to fall short on paper,” she says about SIUC’s admission process.

SIUC takes an individual approach. For instance, if a student’s credentials are borderline, SIUC is willing to offer that student an opportunity if the applicant shows potential in other areas. That is, if students have lower test scores and a decent class rank, but have taken a strong curriculum in high school and performed well, and show a history of being active in activities throughout high school, there is a good chance they’ll be considered for admission to the university.

“We try to take a more holistic approach to the student’s file so that we are able to provide students with a plan for success,” says Valle. One such approach is the Center for Academic Success. Admission through CAS provides students with a supportive environment to help them reach their potential. Other supportive services CAS provides include the University 101 course, an intensive advising program, as well as mentoring, tutoring and the ongoing monitoring of progress.

Occasionally, after admissions and faculty review student files, the university finds that some students are not ready for admission to a four-year institution. SIUC offers a couple of options, including the Two-Plus-Two program, which encourages those students to attend a community college and provides ongoing monitoring and counseling by a staff member at SIU. Provided the student stays on track, he or she will be guaranteed admission to SIUC for the last two years of a degree program; all credits will transfer.
SIUC not only has a diverse student population, but also offers students diversity of staff, academic majors and exposure to a multitude of professional and academic opportunities. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale
