Miles, Prenzler candidates for Madison County treasurer
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

EDWARDSVILLE - It's official: Democrat Frank Miles and Republican Kurt Prenzler are candidates for Madison County treasurer.

They are the only candidates who filed petitions by a Monday deadline to seek their respective parties' nominations in the Feb. 2 primary election. The current treasurer, Fred Bathon, plans to retire at the end of this year.

Two other countywide offices will be filled next year. County Clerk Mark Von Nida and Sheriff Bob Hertz, both Democrats and incumbents, are seeking re-election. No one filed for the Republican nominations for those offices.

Races have developed for several Madison County Board seats.

John M. Fleming of Worden and Thomas O. Burcham Jr. of New Douglas will battle for the Democratic nomination in District 3. The winner would oppose Republican incumbent William S. Meyer of Hamel, who is unopposed for his party's nomination.

Incumbent Michael J. Walters of Godfrey will be challenged by Gene Frizzo of Godfrey for the Republican nomination in District 7 and the winner may have clear sailing in the general election. No Democrats filed for the seat.

Incumbent Michael Holliday Sr. of Alton faces a challenge from Michael Drake of Alton for the Democratic nomination in District 8. No Republicans filed for that seat.

William Catalano III and Douglas Hulme, both of Edwardsville, will compete for the Republican nomination in District 17, where the incumbent, Republican Hal Patton, did not seek re-election. Ann E. Gorman of Edwardsville is unopposed in a bid for the Democratic nomination.

Incumbent Kristen Novacich of Granite City faces a challenge from Gary Miller for the Democratic nomination in District 20. No Republicans filed for that seat.
