Man is found guilty of two murders
Howard Street shooting suspects
Police have charged Brian Mann, left, in the shooting death of Jivabhai "Jack" Patel of Chesterfield and Barbara Abeln, 60, of Arnold; his trial is still pending. Jerome Jones, right, was convicted Friday. (Handouts)
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

ST. LOUIS — Nimisha Patel was five months pregnant when three armed robbers burst through the door of her family's wholesale business in Old North St. Louis last year.

"One guy grabbed money from my hand and then threw me on the floor," Patel, 25, told a St. Louis jury this week. "Then he shot me three times — in both legs and my ankle."

Her unborn child also survived the May 12, 2008, attack at the Rock Bottom Wholesale Shop. But her father-in-law, Jivabhai "Jack" Patel of Chesterfield, and a female employee, Barbara Abeln, 60, of Arnold, did not.

Late Friday, a St. Louis jury found Jerome W. Jones, 27, of St. Louis, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery, one count of first-degree assault and four counts of armed criminal action in what prosecutors called a "cold-blooded massacre." Sentencing was set for Dec. 18.

A second suspect, Brian D. Mann, 23, awaits trial on the same charges.

The crime was recorded by more than a dozen surveillance cameras, installed just two days before the killings. Jurors watched the videos over and over Friday before reaching their verdicts.

Prosecutors said the men planned the robbery and then executed the victims when things went wrong.

"The evidence is overwhelming," prosecutor Sean O'Hagan told the jury. "He pointed a loaded weapon at these people as soon as he came through the door."

The jury also heard from a witness who picked Jones out of a police lineup as one of the gunmen.

Defense attorney John Tucci told the jury to discount the identification because the witness saw Jones' photo in the newspaper before he picked the defendant in the lineup.

"The evidence is not crystal clear," Tucci said during his closing argument.

Police testified earlier this week that they arrested Jones and Mann minutes after the shooting, fleeing in a car that matched the description given by witnesses at the scene.

In an audio-recorded statement to police, Jones described in detail the plans to rob the store at 1120 Howard Street. He said he waited near the front door while another gunman went into the office. He heard shots and began firing himself. Jones said he fired his weapon twice.

In the recording, Jones said he confessed in hopes that he would get a shorter sentence than the other robbers.

But Jones pleaded not guilty, and did not testify at his trial.

Family members said Jack Patel moved to St. Louis about 25 years ago from Mumbai, India. He owned another wholesale business in St. Louis with his brother, Kanu, who is known as Ken. The brothers bought Rock Bottom about two years ago. It sold items such as candy and cigarettes to convenience stores but was not open to the public for retail.
